GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY - LEONARD NIMOY EVENT HORIZON THEATER A/V RENOVATION

LEONARD NIMOY EVENT HORIZON THEATER

Los Angeles, California

The Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater, opened in 2006 as part of Griffith Observatory’s major expansion, serves as a multipurpose venue for lectures, films, and live programming. By 2024, its original audiovisual systems had reached obsolescence, prompting a comprehensive renovation to ensure technical reliability, flexibility, and audience engagement for the future.

The renovation focused on replacing aging projection, sound, and control systems with state-of-the-art digital technologies. Upgrades included high-resolution laser projection, immersive surround audio, and fully networked control for seamless integration of multimedia content. TheatreDNA worked to maximize flexibility, enabling the theater to support Griffith Observatory’s signature public programs—including All Space Considered—alongside films, lectures, and educational presentations. The design emphasized user-friendly operation for staff, robust infrastructure for live and streaming events, and adaptability for evolving media formats. Acoustic refinements, lighting upgrades, and improved accessibility features completed the renovation, reinforcing the theater’s role as a dynamic educational platform.

Reopened in 2024, the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater now offers a cutting-edge audiovisual environment within an intimate 200-seat venue. The upgrades enhance Griffith Observatory’s ability to deliver inspiring public programs, expand its digital outreach, and continue its mission of making science and space exploration accessible to diverse audiences.
