TEATRO COLSUBSIDIO
TEATRO COLSUBSIDIO ROBERTO ARIAS PEREZ
Bogotá, Colombia
Opened in 1981, Teatro Colsubsidio is a 1,000-seat proscenium theatre and a cornerstone of Bogotá’s performing arts landscape. As programming shifted over time from primarily acoustic concerts to a broader mix of amplified music and popular programming, the facility’s technical systems, audience amenities, and life-safety infrastructure no longer aligned with contemporary expectations. Colsubsidio commissioned a comprehensive evaluation to reposition the theatre for long-term relevance, safety, and competitiveness.
In 2019, TheatreDNA participated in an intensive evaluate the theatre’s performance systems and the artist and patron experience. The study identified limited lobby capacity, inadequate restroom counts, confusing arrival and wayfinding, and compromised sightlines in select seating areas. Technical findings identified outdated stage machinery, limited rigging flexibility, inefficient orchestra pit configurations, and the absence of a central front-of-house sound mix position. Recommendations focused on reconfiguring seating and balconies, adding removable orchestra pit seating wagons, modernizing and upgrading performing systems and support spaces. The team also outlined strategies for a flexible studio theatre and improved acoustic adaptability to support both amplified and acoustic programming.
The study aided in transforming Teatro Colsubsidio into a safer, more flexible, and technically competitive venue. The resulting framework positioned the venue to support a wider range of programming, strengthen its market position in Bogotá as a cultural destination worth visiting.
