ROYAL HIGH SCHOOL MPR THEATRE RENOVATION
ROYAL HIGH SCHOOL MPR THEATRE
Ventura, California
Royal High School’s existing multi-purpose room functioned simultaneously as a cafeteria, assembly space, and performance venue, creating operational, safety, and technical limitations. The District sought to re-envision the MPR as a flexible performance environment that could better support growing music, theatre, and dance programs while maintaining daily instructional and food-service use.
The project involved a comprehensive redesign of the MPR, with Architecture for Education leading architectural design and TheatreDNA providing theatre planning and equipment design. The team evaluated existing conditions and student program needs, then developed solutions to introduce performance-grade infrastructure within a flat-floor, low-ceiling environment. Design strategies included resilient stage flooring, upgraded rigging and lighting positions, telescopic seating platforms, adjustable acoustics, integrated AV systems, and improved power, control, and cable management. The approach balanced code compliance, student safety, and durability for transitioning between cafeteria and performance modes.
Completed in 2019, the renovated Royal High School MPR now functions as a true multi-use performance venue supporting assemblies, concerts, theatrical productions, and daily school operations. The project expanded program capacity, improved technical training opportunities, and delivered a cost-effective cultural asset that maximizes flexibility and long-term value for the District and community.
