LONG BEACH CONVENTION CENTER RENOVATION

THE WAVE AT RAINBOW BRIDGE

Long Beach, California

The Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center sought to revitalize aging outdoor public spaces and underutilized circulation areas while strengthening its identity as a coastal destination. The challenge was to transform the Rainbow Bridge and adjacent Civic Plaza into an iconic, programmable environment that could support events, daily activation, and seamless indoor–outdoor connectivity.

The project strategy emphasized placemaking, flexibility, and experiential technology. TheatreDNA supported live event space planning and performance-oriented infrastructure to ensure the outdoor environment could function as both a public amenity and an event-ready extension of the campus. “The Wave” was conceived as a large-scale, programmable LED installation integrated into the Rainbow Bridge, creating a dynamic visual gateway between venues. Technical coordination addressed power, control systems, sightlines, and durability for frequent public use and special events. The design reinforced pedestrian flow, enhanced nighttime activation, and aligned with broader campus improvements, including the Pacific Ballroom and Civic Plaza, to create cohesiveness between indoor and outdoor event spaces.

The completed Wave at Rainbow Bridge delivers a signature, immersive landmark that elevates the Convention Center’s public realm. The installation enhances guest experience, supports festivals and civic events, and strengthens the Center’s brand, while providing the City with a flexible, high-impact asset that drives visitation, tourism, and year-round activation.
